In October, we wrote that a new trend is starting to catch on among divorcees in New York and around the country. Rather than mourning the loss of their relationship and becoming socially isolated, more divorcees are choosing to celebrate a new chapter in life by throwing divorce parties.
These can be as simple or elaborate as the host chooses, but many divorce parties are a gathering of friends and may include divorce-themed cakes and party favors. New York residents may even be able to hire a divorce party planner, as this trend is quickly becoming big business.
In fact, the concept of the divorce party was recently turned into a musical which will soon be premiering at a theater in South Florida. The show is called "Divorce Party The Musical: The Hilarious Journey to Hell . . . and Back!"
The concept was created by a 46-year-old divorcee who has turned her own hard-earned wisdom into a career as an author and divorce coach. She teamed up with an established theater producer to put the show together.
According to a news interview with the creators, the main character in the show is a recent divorcee named Linda. Three of her female friends arrive to help cheer her up as she goes through the process of moving out of the house she lived in with her ex-husband. The gathering turns into a weekend-long divorce party.
The musical also uses parodies of hit songs in order to spoof and poke fun at what might otherwise be an uncomfortable subject. The end result is a musical that shows the lighter side of marital splits.
It has yet to be seen whether or not the musical will be popular. But if it does catch on, perhaps it will someday play in New York. If so, newly divorced singles here could add a trip to the theater with friends to the itinerary of their own divorce party.
